VISAKHAPATNAM : All-rounder Nadine de Klerk ’s sensational hitting at the death and her unbeaten 84 (54b, 8x4, 5x6) upstaged Richa Ghosh ’s brilliant 94 (77b, 11x4, 4x6) as South Africa snatched a thrilling three-wicket victory against India in the Women’s World Cup match at the ACAVDCA International stadium on Thursday.

India looked on course after dismissing South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt in the 36th over. But what transpired in the last four overs stunned the crowd at the stadium. Chasing a 252-run target, South Africa were down at 142/6 in 36 overs. But De Klerk saw her team home with an over to spare, smashing Amanjot Kaur for two sixes in the 49th over.
This was after Richa produced one of the epic knocks for India, batting first. Coming in with India reeling at 102/6 after another batting failure from the top and middle-order largely due to their struggle against left-arm spinners Chloe Tryon (3/32) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (2/46), Richa stitched two crucial partnerships — 51 off 84 balls with Amanjot Kaur and 88 of 53 balls with Sneh Rana (33; 24b, 6x4) — to guide India to 251.
South Africa were off to a terrible start to their chase as Kranthi dismissed last-match centurion Tanzim Bits (0) with a stunning left-handed catch off her own bowling in the third over. Amanjot got rid of Sune Luus (5) as South Africa struggled to 34/2 in the powerplay.
Rana ended a promising 39-run stand between Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp by castling the latter’s off-stump while Deepti removed Anneke Bosch (1) with a return catch to reduce SA to 58/4. Local girl Shree Charani also got into the act, trapping Sinalo Jafta (18) as half of the Proteas batters were back in the pavilion.
Wolvaardt kept her side in the hunt with a 111-ball 70 (8x4), and a 61-run stand with Tryon (49). Kranti ended Wolvaardt’s vigil with a yorker and looked like sealing the match in India’s favour. However, de Klerk and Tryon added 69 runs for the seventh wicket. Once Tryon was out lbw to Rana, De Klerk hit Kranti for 6, 6, 4 in the 47th over to bring down the equation to 23 from three overs. She then smoked Deepti for two more boundaries for an 11-run over before finishing the match.
Earlier, the Indian openers put on 55 runs in 10 overs. However, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal had contrasting outings. While Pratika began well by guiding Marizanne Kapp for a boundary off the very first ball, Smriti struggled to find her timing.
Smriti could not find a boundary in her first 21 deliveries. She danced down the track to loft Ayabonga Khaka for a straight six that took her past Belinda Clarke (970) as the highest run-getter in a calendar year.
However, Mlaba struck with her second delivery by dismissing Smriti (23; 32b; 1x4, 1x6) as the batter holed out to long-on. Mlaba struck again dismissing Harleen Deol (13) with a delivery that spun enough to castle the batter’s middle and off stump.
