The paddock was rocked on Wednesday by news of Christian Horner's departure from Red Bull. The long-standing team principal had been in his role since 2005, but with performance declining and Max Verstappen's future becoming uncertain, the team's hierarchy decided the time was right for a change.
Horner leaves Red Bull with eight Drivers' Championship and six Constructors' Championship trophies under his belt, having overseen one of the greatest dynasties in modern F1 history in the ground effect era. His replacement, Laurent Mekies, has an unenviable task on his hands.
Red Bull's predicament is clear to see. The team has dropped to fourth in the Constructors' Championship standings, and with Horner, Rob Marshall, Jonathan Wheatley and Adrian Newey all gone, what remains is the skeleton of the leadership structure that dominated in 2022 and 2023.
