Experts have shared three simple cleaning rules that could help deter spiders from your home. These straightforward steps can ensure you remove hiding spaces for the creatures.
September is not a good time of year for arachnophobes in the UK, as the cooler temperatures mean spiders will start to head into homes seeking drier, warmer conditions. It also marks the beginning of their mating season meaning male spiders will come inside looking for females.
If you are not the biggest fan of the eight-legged creatures, it is worth taking some steps to spider-proof your home. Luckily experts have revealed this can be simple and cheap to do.
Pest UK has urged people to adhere to three cleaning rules to reduce the likelihood of finding spiders in the house.

On its website, Pest UK recommended you:
- Clear the clutter
- Get rid of webs
- Vacuum regularly
Pest UK explained that spiders like to lay low in places that are out of sight. It said: "They love hiding in boxes and packages while they wait for their prey.
"Keep your home tidy and free of clutter that could encourage spiders to take residence. "
Get rid of websIt advised: "Check your rooms regularly, particularly corners, for spider webs and remove them where ever you find them."
Vacuum regularly"Vacuum regularly and thoroughly, taking special care in awkward spots behind cupboards, in dark corners, and under sofas where spiders like to hide," it added.
This advice is backed by Country Living, which said: "Spiders like having somewhere to hide, so keep your house neat and tidy through regular tidying, cleaning and decluttering to prevent mess from building up.
"Plastic storage containers are better than cardboard boxes as they are harder for spiders to crawl into. Make sure to dust and vacuum frequently to rid your house of unwanted webs."
If this is not enough, you could also consider filling your home with the following plants which are known to deter spiders:
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Lavender
- Mint
- Chrysanthemum
- Citronella
