Emma Raducanu is set to commence her 2025 Wimbledon campaign on Monday afternoon, facing off against Welsh teen sensation Mimi Xu in the first round of the women's singles. The 22-year-old enters the Championships as Britain's top seed. Despite modest expectations for herself at SW19 this year, she hopes to progress beyond the fourth round for the first time.

Raducanu's return to SW19 follows a controversy earlier this year when she was accused of flouting a 150-year-old rule at the All England Club. In March, she faced accusations of "arrogance" from club members for allegedly disregarding the long-established dress code at SW19. The regulations stipulate that players must wear all-white attire during matches and practice sessions, a rule that also applies to the main Grand Slam event in the summer.

However, the 2021 US Open champion was reportedly seen on the club's courts wearing "whatever she want[ed]," allegedly donning a pink outfit for a practice session.

At the time, the Daily Mail reported that her actions had been "enraging members" of the prestigious club.

"It's so unfair," an irate member told the publication. "Who does she think she is? Just because she's won the US Open doesn't mean she can wear whatever she wants."

The All England Club's dress code, first established in the 1880s, mandates that players must don "suitable tennis attire that is almost entirely white" from the moment they step onto the court.

In 2023, an amendment was made to allow female players to wear dark undershorts beneath their kit due to menstrual concerns, but the rules remain stringent.

For instance, acceptable white outfits do "not include off-white or cream", and only a single colour trim of 10mm is permitted around necklines or sleeve cuffs.

It appears Raducanu has taken this lesson to heart, as she has been spotted training for this year's tournament in an all-white ensemble on the championship courts.

She is far from the first star to cause a stir with her Wimbledon wardrobe choice, with several of the sport's biggest names also falling foul of the dress code.

In 2022, Nick Kyrgios caused a stir by stepping onto the court in red Nike Jordan shoes and a matching cap before changing into his white gear, while even the legendary Roger Federer was reprimanded for sporting orange-soled shoes on the revered courts.
