You can keep your bread fresh if you use one thing when storing it. Bread is a regular supermarket purchase for Brits, with many people buying loaves of bread multiple times per week. However, if you struggle to get through a whole loaf of bread before it starts to go stale, then you might want to try out one storage method that some people swear by, which involves storing it with one unexpected item that's becoming more common in modern homes.
Of course, some people place their bread in the freezer. However, others like to save their freezer space for things like meal-prepped lunches and frozen meals from the supermarket. It turns out that freezing isn't the only way to keep your bread fresher for longer. Whether you buy your bread from a supermarket or you go to a local bakery for a freshly made loaf, this storage method could be worth trying to reduce your food waste and save a little bit of cash.
Some experts have suggested beeswax paper as the trick for keeping bread fresher for longer. Although this is somewhat of a new trend, beeswax paper is becoming common in more households as it is a sustainable way to wrap food, rather than disposable cling film or tinfoil.
Also known as a beeswax wrap, this handy kitchen item is made from a piece of cotton infused with a mixture of beeswax, tree resin, and oil. You can wash these and reuse them for up to a year, so it is a cost-effective way to wrap up sandwiches, wraps and leftover meals.
The benefit is that it is breathable while also not letting too much of the food's moisture escape. And this is ideal for bread.
Chef Chase Williams told Food & Wine: "It's a cool product that holds its shape well and can be washed and reused, so we can cut down on plastic wrap usage as well."
Meanwhile, Emily Fazio from Home Living Handbook tried wrapping her bread in beeswax paper, and she said that it helped her to keep the bread fresher for longer. She said: "I embrace sustainable options in the kitchen where possible, and this is an easy way to help my freshly baked loaves of bread last longer.
"Stop wrapping your artisan bread in plastic and keep your bread soft with the help of this linen bread bag lined with beeswax."
