Not everyone cares if their house smells of fresh linen and flowers, but nobody enjoys a foul-smelling home. Fortunately, a professional cleaner has revealed five little-known mistakes that could be causing your home to smell. From shower mats to cloth chairs, the cleaning expert identified several common culprits that could cause a sour odour.
The tips were shared by content creator @angieonaadventure, who often posts advicefor her 40,000 TikTok followers. Angie titled her post: "5 things people don't realise make their house stink from a professional cleaner."
Sharing her first point, she explained: "Shoes by the door. If worn often, the sweat and moisture could cause an off smell. I recommend a shoe spray." Angie continued: "Shower mats. Over time, they grow mould after getting wet often. Even washing won't help so best to replace. I would get a stone one."

Next, she added: "Dog beds. Vacuum often and wash them if you can. Get one where you can remove the fabric." Angie went on: "Trash can. Sometimes you have spills you don't realise. Wipe the whole trash can every so often to make sure it stays fresh.
"Taking cotton pads with essential oils and throwing them at the bottom helps." For her last point, Angie said: "Cloth chairs. Really old fabric keeps smells. A fabric/room spray is just a temporary fix."
In her caption, Angie added: "Fallen victim of all these things. The amount of people who have a fear of having a bad-smelling house is real." Her post proved very popular, and it gained over 250,000 likes in a few days.
Relying to the post, someone wrote: "People who have cloth seating including couches never get them steamed cleaned. I don’t get it." A commenter shared: "The stone bath mat also saves you money in the long run. it dries really fast, and to clean it you just sand it down a little bit.
"It was expensive up front but I’ve had mine over 2 years now and it’s still in perfect condition, meanwhile who knows how many bath mats I would’ve bought by now as they collect mould over time." Another response read: "I’ve been putting a few drops of my oil for my diffuser on the bottom of the trash can every other time I take it out."
On the flip side, the expert shared another video highlighting the five things she would put in her home as a professional cleaner to make it 'low maintenance.' Angie explained: "Rounded radius corner sink. My favourite sinks to clean. No corners to scrape. Natural coloured cabinets.
"They never look obviously dirty. Patterned tile in the kitchen. Never looks dirty. Good for people who like extending their cleaning routine. Simple light features. Less dust settles on these types. Cafe appliances. So easy to clean, no streaking." Once again, the video was very popular and earned over 460,000 likes.
