It's usually taboo to slate parents for their choice ofbaby names, but some are so outlandish it's hard not to comment. Parents have the freedom to pick any name that tickles their fancy for their newborns. Whether it's a traditional name or something more avant-garde, there's no definitive right or wrong.
However, choosing an extremely odd name might attract some raised eyebrows and negative feedback. One expectant mother left her sister utterly astonished with her choice of name for her soon-to-arrive son, as the name was so extraordinary she initially thought it was a wind-up.
Taking to Reddit, the woman explained how her sister has had a lifelong passion for marine life and had always dreamed of giving her offspring an ocean-inspired name.

While there are many distinctive sea-related names like Ocean, Marina, Coral, and Finn, this mum-to-be has decided to name her boy after a fish – the sea bass, to be precise.
The shocked sister explained: "She said she settled on the name 'Seabass', yes, the fish. I am not making this up, I truly wish I was. She's always been a playful person so I truly thought she was joking but she said she really loved it."
With seven months of pregnancy behind her, the future mother has already invested in personalised name signs and a monogrammed blanket emblazoned with 'Seabass', showing she's dead serious about this quirky choice.
The soon-to-be aunt shared her concerns, saying: "I told her that I really don't think this is a good choice, tried to give her other nature or ocean names, and even asked if she could use the name Sebastian."
However, she was met with resistance. Her sister added: "She wasn't having it and said 'This name feels right for him'. I know he's not my child, and so I'm trying to respect her choice."
The sibling acknowledged the baby isn't hers, so she's trying to respect her sister's decision.
However, online commenters were equally stunned by the mother's unusual choice of name for her son. Many agreed that Seabass could be a cute nickname for someone named Sebastian, but found it odd as a given name.
One commenter expressed disbelief: "Oh, good grief. We know a little guy called Sebastian who gets called Seabass by his family, but it's not like it's his actual name!"
Another was at a loss for words: "I actually can't think of a way to respond to this in a nice way... I am genuinely flabbergasted."
However, the poster went on to edit her post with some good news, saying: "FINAL UPDATE: She went with Sebastian!! Thank God! I was so so worried. But his nickname is Seabass haha!"
