This year, Shri Krishna Janmashtami is falling on 16 August 2025. On this day, devotees observe a fast and break the fast by duly worshiping at the time of Lord Krishna's birth at midnight. Some special rules related to this fast have been mentioned in religious texts, following which the fruits of the fast increase manifold. What to do and what not to do in the Janmashtami fast?

Get up before sunrise on this day, take a bath, and take a vow of fasting in your mind.

Maintain restraint and purity throughout this day.

People who observe a fruit fast can eat fruits, milk, curd, tapioca, dishes made of buckwheat flour, etc., on this day.

On the other hand, those who observe a Nirjala fast should avoid consuming any other food or water on this day.

Avoid sleeping during the day as well.

Do not consume grains and salt during the fast. Also, keep away from non-vegetarian food.

Breaking the fast only after the birth of Shri Krishna at midnight.

Worship Lord Krishna both in the morning and evening.

Do not wear black clothes on this day and do not use black items in worship.

While breaking the fast, first offer the food to Lord Krishna and only then eat it yourself.

Importance of Janmashtami

According to mythology, in the Dwapar era, when the atrocities of King Kansa of Mathura were at their peak and unrighteousness was spreading on earth, then Lord Vishnu took birth in the form of his eighth incarnation, Shri Krishna. From childhood itself, Shri Krishna performed many deeds to protect religion and end unrighteousness, among which the killing of Kansa is the most important.
