Veteran actress Sandhya Shantaram passes away at 87, leaving behind a legacy of dance, drama, and timeless performances

The golden era of Indian cinema has lost one of its sparkling stars. Sandhya Shantaram, famed for her mesmerising dance moves and expressive acting, passed away at 87, as per IANS. Born Vijaya Deshmukh in Andhra Pradesh, she moved to Mumbai chasing her cinematic dreams and soon became the leading lady—and later, the wife—of legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram. Together, they created films that still shine in memory and music.

Sandhya's Career
Sandhya’s career soared in the 1950s and ’60s, starring in Hindi and Marathi films that became classics. From the rhythmic magic of Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955) to the social drama of Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1958) and the visual spectacle of Navrang (1959), she brought grace, emotion, and unmatched energy to the screen. Her songs, like “Jhanak Jhanak Tori Payal Baje Payaliya” and “Nain So Nain Nahin Milao,” became cultural touchstones, still celebrated decades later.

In Marathi cinema, Sandhya made her mark with Pinjra (1972), a performance that became iconic for its depth and poise. Even today, her work in songs like “Jaa Re Hat Natkhat” remains a superhit, proving her artistry transcends generations. Sandhya Shantaram’s legacy isn’t just in the films she starred in—it’s in the way she blended dance, drama, and charisma into performances that continue to inspire.

In 1975, she was last seen in a Marathi movie, Chandanachi Choli Ang Ang Jali, which earned her accolades and the Filmfare Award Marathi for Best Actress.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar expressed his sadness over the passing of legendary actress Sandhya Shantaram. He highlighted her iconic roles in films like Pinjra, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Navrang, and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, noting that they will always be cherished. Bhandarkar praised her remarkable talent and mesmerizing dance skills, saying they have left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, honouring her as a true cinematic icon.


Indian politician and cricket administrator Ashish Shelar expressed grief over Sandhya Shantaram’s passing. He noted that the news of her demise is deeply saddening and highlighted her remarkable contributions to both Marathi and Hindi cinema. Shelar emphasised that through her exceptional acting and dancing skills, Sandhya left a distinct and lasting impression on audiences.


He further added that her unforgettable performances in films like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, Do Aankhen Barah Haath, and especially Pinjra will always remain etched in the hearts of viewers, and wished that the Almighty grant eternal peace to her soul.
