Himachal weather update: Schools, colleges shut down in these districts after IMD red alert

Send Push
All schools and educational institutions in Manali and Banjar sub-divisions of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, will remain closed on Monday, 30 June 2025, due to a warning of heavy rainfall by the Indian Meteorological Department ( IMD).

The Sub-Divisional Magistrates of both regions issued separate orders stating that the decision has been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff, as movement may be unsafe during the expected downpour.

IMD issues rain alert

According to the IMD's alert, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the area. The order from the Manali SDM mentioned that such weather conditions can make travel risky for school and college students, staff, and trainees.

"To ensure public safety, all government and private schools, ITIs, vocational training centres, and Anganwadis will stay closed on 30 June,” the SDM of Manali said. The heads of institutions have been asked to strictly follow the order under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

A similar directive has been issued in Banjar, where all educational institutions have also been ordered to remain shut for the day.

State witnesses rain damage

Heavy rains have already caused serious damage across Himachal Pradesh. Landslides, blocked roads, and waterlogging have been reported in several areas.

State Revenue, Tribal Development, and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi said that since 20 June, at least 34 people have died due to weather-related incidents and road accidents.

"Out of the 34 deaths, 17 were due to rain-related events and the rest due to road accidents," he told ANI.

More rain expected

IMD has predicted rainfall at the rate of 5–15 mm per hour in Kullu, along with moderate thunderstorms. Authorities have advised people to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
