BRICS Summit leaders’ statement will mention terrorism to the ‘satisfaction’, stated the secretary (economic relations) in MEA, Dammu Ravi, while announcing PM Narendra Modi’s trip to Brazil for the BRICS Summit on July 6-7.
Modi will seek to build a broad anti-terror coalition when he attends the BRICS Summit and meet leaders on the sidelines.
Ravi emphasised India's engagement with countries of Global South with PM Modi's visit to five countries –– Ghana, Brazil, Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago and Namibia.
“Our solidarity with BRICS… important to connect with leadership at the Summit. Great opportunity for PM Modi to connect with leadership of the Global South,” Ravi explained. While the Chinese President is skipping this edition of BRICS, the Russian President cannot travel to Brazil due to an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. Brazil is party to ICC.
“We’re trying to bring in some understanding of how important it is to have alternative mechanisms to do trade and projects in national currencies,” Ravi further said.
The PM will be on a state visit to Brazil on July 8 after the BRICS Summit. As reported first by ET, defence cooperation will be a key item on the agenda of the visit.
Brazil is interested in getting offshore vessels with India and submarine cooperation, according to MEA’s secretary (east) P Kumaran. Brazil is interested in India’s Akash air defence system, Kumaran informed.
Senior MEA officials were briefing the media ahead of the PM trip.
The BRICS Summit will focus on reforms of global governance and ‘peace & security’. India to be handed over the BRICS chair during the Brazil summit.
Ahead of Brazil, Modi will visit Argentina on July 4-5, the first bilateral visit of an Indian PM in the past 56 years, according to Kumaran. Critical minerals partnership will be a key item on the agenda for Modi’s trip to Buenos Aires. Modi was in Argentina in 2018 to attend the G20 Summit.
Ahead of that, Modi will address the Parliament in Ghana, his first stop in the five-country visit. Agriculture, creation of vaccine hub, defence cooperation, critical minerals and DPI will be key focus in Ghana and a number of MoUs will be signed.
