Mikel Arteta spells out Arsenal demands to Eberechi Eze with pointed remark

Mikel Arteta made it clear he expects the best from Eberechi Eze as he claimed the Arsenal new boy "should have scored another two" after notching his first goal for the Gunners in their win over Port Vale.

The summer signing came up with his first goal in red after 10 minutes as the Gunners beat their League One opponents to advance into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Eze was among several marquee signings as he joined from Crystal Palace.

The forward excelled at Selhurst Park and many believe he can be a difference maker for Arsenal, but Arteta clearly wants more from the England international. Despite his neat finish at Vale Park his head coach was quick to reference the chances he missed - not the one he converted.

He told Sky Sports on Eze: "That's why we got him for, to win football matches. He should have scored another two I think."

The 27-year-old scored a career high 14 times last term for the Eagles and has hit double figures in each of the past three seasons. Having been the main attacking cog, he is now one of several major names who can produce within the Arsenal squad.

Eze said on his first goal: "Very special. I've been waiting to score for this club for a long time and the first is very special. It's a very difficult place to come.

"It's important we got the first goal and we could move forward. You've seen in the past few weeks what players are doing when they come off the bench. It's a lot of depth and brings fresh energy which is what we need."

A discussion around several of Arsenal's frontmen is where they are best deployed and Arteta was again quizzed on how he intends to use the £67.5million Eze, who has proven he can be effective out wide and in central positions. The Spaniard didn't want to define him in one role and believes he will continue to improve as he plays more and more with his new team-mates.

The Arsenal boss said: "He played very centrally against a team that's obviously with a 5-4-1, they are super compact inside, it's not easy to find spaces but he's very capable with the goal. You've seen that, there are another three or four actions that he's completely through and people playing through.

"He needs to still play more time a little bit with those guys to understand the timings, especially the things that he needs to do and then actions like that will be more consistent and better for us. In general, very good. There is still a lot more to give I think."
